i think that they have claws,
Claws in the paws, they stick them in when they climb, same with cats (not house cats, lions and tigers)
Dogs can't climb trees because they don't have the right claws.

It uses it's claws to cling onto the bark.
Its in their nature.

they have sharp curved claws that help them grip the bark
they have sharp little claws and are not that heavy, they have like fingers so they can use the claws to hold onto little cracks in the tree's bark
