What must be done to keep squirrels and tree roots from distroying our septic tank & leechfield ?

We live at 6000 feet above sea level. We don't want to kill them just deter them... perhaps citrus oil in the water? or?What must be done to keep squirrels and tree roots from distroying our septic tank %26amp; leechfield ?
Squirrels?? They must be serious diggers!!

I don't know that I'd pour any kind of oil into a septic system. It'd contribute to the scum layer that can build up. And if your septic tank has a baffle wall in the middle, citrus oil wouldn't necessarily get to the outlet anyway.

I did a search for ';septic roots'; and got several sites that sell water soluble additives for killing roots. Here's one

Which does get me thinking about our septic tank...What must be done to keep squirrels and tree roots from distroying our septic tank %26amp; leechfield ?
For the squirrels try soap shavings spread around the area, try fertilizer where the tree roots are i heard the roots will grow upward instead of down to clog sewers and pipes.
