How do you repel squirrels when they eat the tree bark?

We just had a 95 gallon tree planted this weekend. It is a lacebark elm. The squirrels in our yard are eating the bark right off the tree. I wrapped aluminum foil around the branches just to temporarily keep the squirrels away. They have done a lot of damage already. I put mud on the branches to help it heal but the squirrels knock it off as well. How do you repel squirrels when they eat the tree bark?
The best way to repel the squirrels is to make a solution of water and cyanne pepper and spray it on the tree bark. You can get the pepper from the spice isle of your local grocery and mix 3 tablespoons of it in a spray bottle with water. This will need to be done every once in a while and after a good rain. This is a ';hot'; pepper that is most often used in making chilli and it will make their little eyes water and noses run, but will not hurt them. They will not like it and will soon learn to leave that tree alone. It works to keep bugs off your veggies in the garden too, you've just gotta wash them good before eating them. How do you repel squirrels when they eat the tree bark?
I heard many ago to keep the squirrels and chipmunks from digging up and eating your flower bulbs, wrap your hair from your brush around the bulbs or roots of the flowers and that will keep them from digging up your flowers, because the hair is so fine and they don't like the feel of it in their mouth, so they will only try it once. I have done that now for many years and have never had a problem. You can also use thread or a fine yarn. It all has worked for me.

you can put up a piece of plyable sheet metal around the trun make it a large piece so that when the squirrel climbs they can climb past the section of slippery metal they have nothing to grip to
There are several humane ways. The most effective I know is to use capsaicin based spray (ingredient in pepper spray). Mothball based sprays are usually ineffective. Try 'Deer Off' available at Lowes.
