What is a squirrel eating when he tears bark off a tree and nibbles at it then throws it down?

Saw a squirrel tearing bark off a dead limb on one of our oak trees. He would nibble at it then throw it down and tear off another piece. Is he after bugs? Or is he eating the soft part inside? What is a squirrel eating when he tears bark off a tree and nibbles at it then throws it down?
A squirrel will eat a wide variety of foods are taken, ranging from vegetative matter to gall insects, moths, beetles, bird, eggs, and dead fish. Acorn, hickory, walnut, mulberry, and hawthorne seeds are preferred. Food can often become limiting in the winter, so squirrels commonly cache seeds in a scattered fashion for the colder months. Nuts are opened by a levering technique of the lowering incisors, a skill at which squirrels become proficient quickly. When you see a squirrel eating the bark it may be eating insects of larva, it also my be eating the lichen, I am sorry for the rude answer you have gotten here today. What is a squirrel eating when he tears bark off a tree and nibbles at it then throws it down?
he is eating his feelings.
I don't know for sure but it could be like the mossy looking paper-like stuff that grows on oak trees.
He is actually gathering firewood for his campfire. By munching some of the wood he tests whether or not it is dry enough to start a fire for his cooking and laundry.

What who gave me a thumbs down? This is the best answer I've given all day.
He may be just nibbling at the fibers under the bark, I have seen them do it just to agrivate humans and cats. Throwing it at them
most animals chew on non-food things to help with either digestion or to clean their teeth.
