Put a metal ring around it so they can't climb up, I think. I think that's what they make those wide tree ';bracelets'; for.
Mesh wire around the bottom of the tree helps.
12-gauge shotgun. And hang the dead ones in the trees they are destroying. Sounds sick but it works.
You can buy plastic cones that fit around the bottom of the trunk which prevents them climbing up as long as there arnt any close by trees they can jump to them from. I dunno where to get the cones but you can get them. Try that or something that you can apply to the tree... like glue, just got to pull them off and bin em in the morning.
