What can I feed an abandoned newborn squirrel who has fallen from the tree in the backyard?

Is puppy milk replacer suitable? We have been feeding him that. What can I feed an abandoned newborn squirrel who has fallen from the tree in the backyard?
Well I use KMR kitten. A lot of people have cautioned me against KMR because they claim they are prone to Metabolic Bone Disease but I've not found that to be true as long as you MAKE SURE he gets plenty of natural sunlight. I believe THAT is where MBD comes from. I'm of the opinion that puppy replacer is just fine. NO CARNATION or any other human milk is good for him.

I'm not going to give you the ';call a rehabber'; speech because it's been done. What I will tell you is this. This creature needs to be returned to his home when he's weaned. Keeping him is not an option. Squirrels do NOT make good pets. They have nails like razor blades and teeth that can bite you so deeply that they go slam through the bone. And when they get scared they run UP. Which is usually to your neck, your face or your head. The last one I raised put sixteen stitches in my arm..playing.What can I feed an abandoned newborn squirrel who has fallen from the tree in the backyard?
take it to the wildlife rescue center nearest to you.
DO NOT: feed KMR, Puppy milk replacer, Esbilac, they are all highly adulterated cows milk. For emergencies use EVAPORATED MILK DILUTED 50%. DO NOT USE an eye dropper, or a 'pet nurser'. Get a 3cc/mil syringe from the drug store. WITHOUT the Hypodermic.

Are you keeping the baby warm? How? Is it furred or pink ? How did you determine it's a 'newborn'? Edit w/more info, Please!

On your computer type in ';Squirrel Nutrtion and Care';.

This is the website of THE BEST rehabber in the country, her record proves it . READ and follow to the letter her instructions.

Let me know, please, how this comes out.
Do not feed them anything. Go to this website.
do not feed it call a wild animal rescue facility near you, your animal control or animal shelter or vet can probably tell you if you cant find it in the phone book. one problem is they carry rabies, but they also carry other diseases that can make you or your pets sick. plus it will most likely die eventually because puppies have different nutrient requirements than squirrels.

possibly the mom will come get it if you havent left too much human smell on it
if real young think so used to use canned pet milk years ago

as it grows older if you have the tree nuts available that they eat in your area shell some of those to feed. i used to hae a pet rocky mountain gray squirrell in colorado and him and the house dog sorta grew up together and was the best of buds,, he had his own cage etc and went with the dog eveywhere in the pick up truck its like any critter its how you raise and train them
Is there a local Wildlife Shelter in your area that you could call. It will need some kind of water I suppose. Maybe call the local vet? Good luck. You are sweet to want to help him out.
If it decides it's time to eat meat, he'll go for whatever is easiest-- you.

Call the authorities and let them deal with it. They may have to bring in guns to subdue it.
You should not be feeding him at all. Unless you have been trained as a wildlife rehabber, you could be killing him. Squirrels who are fed in captivity often develop Metabolic Bone Disease and die.

Also, the longer you keep him, the less likely he will be able to be released back into the wild where he belongs.

You can not have squirrels as pets for a million reasons. Call a licensed rehabber ASAP!

None of the milk replacers on the market are good for squirrels. They need a special mixture.

Edit to add: Raising squirrels and keeping them is illegal.
Oh boy, do you have a situation on your hands. You see, a newborn squirrel like that can only eat one thing: human flesh. Yes, it's true. And if its thirst isn't quinched soon, it could go on a major killing spree in your neighborhood. Act with haste!
Thats fine you should also feed him prepared carnation powdered milk. Keep him warm and safe. You can also feed him (if he's old enough) Sunflower seeds. They love them =)
